There's a lot to like about the Diablo series in general and Diablo 4 specifically, and the horror fantasy genre is only one of the many cool features that resonate with fans and players. The gear, weapons, and attack animations are a big part of the fun, and several other games are similar to Diablo 4 in this regard.

7 Hades (2020)

Hades is the rogue-like dungeon crawler that brought the genre to the center of the gaming world and put indy developer Supergiant Games on the map. Its success ensured a sequel and several other rogue-likes, and part of what made it a hit was the horror-fantasy aesthetic along with some impressive hand-drawn artwork.

It's not an RPG, but it has some RPG elements, like using the Mirror of Night to customize the main character's powers or a choice of weapons and trinkets that can unlock more powerful and impressive abilities. It's got the same story-rich progression and adventure of Diablo but with a different overall structure.

6 Resident Evil: Village (2021)

Any of the titles in the Resident Evil series would make an ideal Diablo substitute, but Village resembles so many of the places seen in the blasted landscape of Sanctuary that it seems like the ideal choice. There's also the presence of the vampires, which bear an uncanny resemblance to the high-ranking demons of Diablo in size and manner.

A slight twist on the horror genre, Grim Dawn uses a sci-fi setting in the grip of a brutal trans-dimensional war that threatens to destroy all of humanity. It's similar to the apocalyptic story featured in Diablo with the perpetual war between Heaven and Hell and the unknown fate of the world that's stuck between them, along with the design as an ARPG.

The plot includes contacting non-corporeal beings called Aetherials, who can give humans special powers after possessing their bodies for a short time. You choose a class in the game to level and customize, and because of the futuristic setting, they include options like Demolitionist and Occultist.

4 Baldur's Gate 2: Throne Of Bhaal (2001)

Another expansive series with a lot of Diablo-like isometric combat action from which to choose, Baldur's Gate 2: Throne Of Bhaal is one of the darker chapters in this story and keeps with the intense horror aesthetic. This is an expansion pack for Shadows of Amn, the sequel to the first game in the series, and you learn that you can replace the Lord of Murder if you succeed in destroying him.

The game has the same third-person POV and isometric layout as all the Diablo games and includes all of the character customizations you would expect from a Dungeons & Dragons game. There's a remastered version available for modern devices in case that old CD ROM isn't working anymore.

3 Planetscape: Torment (1999)

The interest in horror and occult-themed games is part of what led to the resurgence of Planetscape: Torment. , but it doesn't have the same options as other games in this brand when it comes to character creation. Instead, you control the main character, a fighting class, and progress through a story that includes combat but doesn't focus on it.

It's grim, dark, and creepy, with the whole story starting with the main character's death and revival in an eerie dungeon. His memory is gone, except for a few haunting remains of a woman he loved, but nothing else about how he ended up dead.

2 Cult Of The Lamb (2022)

What if the demons of Diablo were more like Lovecraftian cartoon characters, and instead of fighting the cult, the main character started one of their own? That's the basic premise behind Cult of the Lamb, and it has less character customization than other choices but makes up for it with the options for exploration, crafting, and navigating a world filled with religious fanatics.

It's not as cutesy as it looks, with the opening scene featuring a sacrifice, a pledge to a dark god, and a resurrection. The dark forest and murky waters hold all kinds of evil and dangerous secrets, provided the main character survives them.

1 Torchlight 2 (2012)

A mix of rogue-like dungeons, RPG, and a dark fantasy setting, players start Torchlight 2 by witnessing the destruction of a city, continuing a tradition that started with the first game. There's a main storyline that explains why Torchlight was destroyed, along with side-quests that might be connected to the campaign but can also stand alone.

You choose between classes that have a fantasy-steampunk motif, like Engineer and Embermage, and each has three skill trees for further customization. There isn't much crafting to be done, but you can build your cities, which more than fills the gap.
