Developed by BioWare and released by EA, Dragon Age is an esteemed fantasy RPG franchise that chronicles the myriad escapades of the denizens of Thedas.

To keep the D&D spirit alive until then, we’re highlighting the best game like Dragon Age to play in 2025, including games like Dragon Age Origins and games like Dragon Age Inquisition.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One
Our initial recommendation to Dragon Age fans is Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, another fantasy RPG involving dimensional rifts and hordes of demons.
In it, players assemble a unique party of heroes from a combined 25 classes, 12 character races, and over a thousand spells, feats, and abilities.
Battles in Pathfinder can be played out via one of two modes: real-time combat with the ability to pause or turn-based; players are free to alternate back and forth as they see appropriate.
Like Dragon Age, every quest has multiple outcomes based on the player’s actions, including which party members survive till the end of the game.
Tales of Arise
Platforms: Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Next up on our list is the latest installment of the action-based anime JRPG series Tales of Arise.
The game centers on two characters hailing from opposite worlds, one medieval and one futuristic, as they try and put their differences aside and end the ongoing war between their people.
Anyone familiar with the Tales games will recognize Arise’s Linear Motion Battle System, which allows you and your party to perform team-based attacks to evade, counter, and destroy enemies.
Beyond combat, Tales of Arise offers an assortment of vibrant, open-ended environments on par with those of games like Dragon Age Inquisition.
Tyranny
Platforms: Windows, Linux, Mac
Tyranny is another narrative-driven RPG worth checking out if you enjoy games like Dragon Age that weave political themes into their narrative.
In it, you play as an arbiter of law tasked with deciding whether to maintain the status quo or dismantle the existing government from the inside out.
Similar to Dragon Age, a lot of the game is spent trying to settle disputes between rival factions all vying for control in a constantly changing world.
Considering the game was made by esteemed RPG developer Obsidian, you can count on it to have robust RPG systems, compelling characters, and detailed questlines.
GreedFall
Platforms: Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
While it may not have had the same AAA-scale budget as Dragon Age, GreedFall is still a great time for anyone who enjoys single-player RPGs that err more towards the indie side.
Set in an alternate 17th century where magic exists, it casts you as a noble suffering from an unusual family illness that decides to visit a mystical island in search of a cure.
However, things become complicated when tensions begin to rise between the island’s natives and encroaching colonizers.
Much like in Dragon Age, the player is in charge of deciding whether to form alliances, rivalries, or remain neutral throughout the story.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Linux, Mac
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a sequel to the highly praised RPG in which players are cast as a Watcher, beings with the power to analyze souls and learn from their memories.
This ends up playing a vital role in the game’s story as Eothas, the god of light and rebirth, returns to the world with serious implications for its inhabitants.
Not soon after, souls begin to get stripped from their physical bodies, prompting the player to embark on a perilous voyage across a vast and undiscovered archipelago.
Like Dragon Age, gameplay builds on the foundation of classic D&D gameplay with a wealth of hand-crafted questlines where choices truly matter.
Wasteland 3
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Linux, Mac
While not fantasy, the Wasteland series is sure to scratch a similar RPG itch for Dragon Age fans that also have an affinity for the classic isometric Fallout games.
A good starting point is the most recent entry, Wasteland 3, which sees you venturing into an contaminated frozen wasteland during the 22ndcentury where deranged cults and other factions vie for control.
Players act as leader of the Desert Rangers, a squad of captivating gunslingers trying to survive in this hellish new post-apocalyptic world.
Similar to Dragon Age, the game offers a lot of freedom in how you choose to flesh out your characters’ builds, approach each challenge, and explore the expansive world.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One
Along with Dragon Age, BioWare is known for the sci-fi RPG series Mass Effect, which has its own history of both critically acclaimed and contentious releases, spin-offs, and more recently, remasters.
Seeing as the original Mass Effect came out in the early 2000s, the preferred way to play through the original trilogy is via the Mass Effect Legendary Edition
In it, you play as either a male or female Commander Shepard as they travel across the universe protecting planets from a race of formidable machines called Reapers.
Players are joined by a squad of companions with varied backgrounds that will lend a hand in battle and weigh in on crucial decisions that carry over between games.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Platforms: Windows, Mac
Baldur’s Gate is a historic RPG franchise that dates back even further than Dragon Age and received a recent update with Baldur’s Gate 3entering Steam Early Access.
The game ditches the previous installments’ real-time combat system in favor of turn-based battles in fully 3D environments packed with details and modern graphical effects.
In many ways, it plays similar to games like Fire Emblem, another turn-based strategy RPG series that will no doubt appeal to Dragon Age fans.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is almost ready for its complete 1.0 release. However, interested players can already enjoy plenty of content in the game.
The Outer Worlds
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
Another non-fiction RPG that comes highly-recommended is Obsidian’s black comedy sci-fi romp The Outer Worlds.
In it, players are cast as a blank slate character dubbed The Stranger before getting thrust into a vast adventure spanning multiple planets, factions, and companions.
Much like the Dragon Age series, each quest emphasizes player agency, with pretty much every action assigned its own set of potential outcomes.
This includes unique companion storylines that allow you to learn more about your party members as you help them settle debts, mend relationships, and discover their true purpose.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition
Platforms: Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch
As we wait for news about TES6, let’s go back to one of the greatest open-world RPGs ever with the Skyrim Anniversary Edition.
This new version bundles together a decade’s worth of content that includes the critically acclaimed base game, add-ons from Skyrim Special Edition, and a host of optional Creation Club content.
Those familiar will remember the story takes place 200 years after TES: Oblivion and sees you stepping into the shoes of the Dragonborn, a warrior destined to battle and defeat a powerful dragon.
Similar to Dragon Age, the Elder Scrolls games feature adaptable real-time combat systems that support a broad array of playstyles and allow you to recruit companions for limitless adventures.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Platforms: Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch
The Witcher is yet another universally acclaimed fantasy RPG franchise that needs no introduction and has won countless awards, most recently with the third installment, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The game has you reprising your role as the contemplative monster hunter Geralt as he embarks on an adventure to locate his missing daughter and save her from the clutches of a mystical cult.
Reminiscent of games like Dragon Age, the Witcher 3 offers an exhaustive number of storylines to follow, each tied to different characters, bosses, and locations.
To this point, the game affords no shortage of opportunities to venture off the beaten path and hunt unusual wildlife, gather ingredients for potion-making, or leisurely explore.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Mac
The sequel to Larian Studios’ well-received fantasy RPG transports players to the magical world of Rivellon inspired by D&D tabletop adventures.
In Divinity: Original Sin 2, you’re given the option to form a party from six preset heroes or craft your own before heading off to explore the world.
During your journey, you’ll witness characters form bonds that carry over into turn-based battles with a myriad of win conditions beyond just slaying your opponent.
Whether smiting your foes with powerful elemental attacks, using wit to help them see the err of their ways, or cheesing your way to victory, Original Sin 2 rewards curiosity and creativity at every turn.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
Despite not featuring any references to magic or otherworldly elements, Kingdom Come: Deliveranceis a worthwhile RPG that will appeal to Dragon Age fans.
The game takes place during the reign of the Holy Roman Empire and sees you playing as the son of a blacksmith who decides to join a band of rebels after his family and village get annihilated.
Deliverance’s map functions as a dynamic, breathing open world with many simulation-driven systems that result in a unique mix of RPG and survival gameplay.
In addition to maintaining your character’s hunger, thirst, sleep, and hygiene, the game tasks you with navigating the many intricacies of medieval social dynamics and combat strategies.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Switch
It can be tough to keep up with every new fantasy RPG release, so you’d be forgiven for not remembering or missing out on Dragon’s Dogma entirely.
Originally released in 2012, the Capcom developed/published title drops players in a fantastical setting, not unlike that of the Dragon Age games.
Taking on the role of a custom avatar dubbed the Arisen, players embark on an epic adventure to slay a formidable dragon along with a host of other mythological monstrosities.
Like many games covered on this list, Dark Arisen features robust RPG-driven game mechanics along with a party system and real-time combat.
Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition
Platforms: Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, Linux, Mac
Our final recommendation is another BioWare classic that has withstood the test of time and continues to flourish thanks to a robust community of modders.
Originally released in 2002, Neverwinter Nights is a long-standing MMORPG based on the D&D ruleset with support for custom campaigns where one player takes on the role of dungeon master.
While it’s best enjoyed as a multiplayer experience, solo players will find more than enough content to explore at their own pace.
We suggest Dragon Age fans pick up the Enhanced Edition, which introduces new UI features and bug fixes to included content from Neverwinter Diamond Edition.
