Many in OKC metro left without power face dangerous heat Wednesday, seeking places to cool down (2024)

THIS AFTERNOON. YEAH, THIS IS THAT COOLING CENTER AT 200 MIDWEST BOULEVARD. THEY’LL BE OPEN UNTIL EIGHT THIS EVENING. WE SPOKE WITH A FAMILY WHO WAS AMONG THE FIRST TO ARRIVE. THEY’VE BEEN WITHOUT AC FOR 16 HOURS. HOW HOT IS IT INSIDE YOUR PLACE RIGHT NOW? IT’S ABOUT 9095 AND CLIMBING. AND CLIMBING. YES. IT WAS 83 AT 8:00 THIS MORNING. CHARLOTTE STEWART WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SHOW UP TO THIS COOLING CENTER IN MIDWEST CITY THAT OPENED TO THE PUBLIC AT NOON TODAY. SHE STRUGGLED TO FIND SOMEWHERE COOL TO STAY MOST OF THE MORNING. EVERYTHING WAS CLOSED BECAUSE THERE WAS NO POWER. THIS MORNING. UM, EVERYTHING SLOWLY STARTING TO OPEN UP. NOT EVERYTHING, BUT QUITE A FEW PLACES ARE STARTING TO OPEN UP. BUT, UM, THIS IS THE ONE PLACE THAT WE KNOW WE CAN COME WHERE IT’S GOING TO BE NICE AND COOL FOR US. WE DEFINITELY HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE THAT IF IF THEY NEED TO COOL DOWN, THIS IS A LOCATION WHERE WE’VE GOT SOME SPACE AND WE’RE HAPPY TO PROVIDE THAT FOR THEM. JOSH RYAN, WITH THE CITY OF MIDWEST CITY SAYS THEY’LL KEEP THIS COOLING CENTER OPEN UNTIL EIGHT THIS EVENING, AND WILL HAVE WATER AND THE RED CROSS ON HAND. WE’VE GOT PLACES WHERE YOU CAN CHARGE YOUR PHONE. YOU CAN SIT AND RELAX. YOU CAN BRING SOME GAMES OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. HANG OUT ALL DAY WITH US IF YOU’D LIKE. AND THE COOLING CENTER, AS WE SAID, DOES OPEN. IT STAYS OPEN UNTIL 8 P.M. THIS EVENING. THE CREWS HERE IN MIDWEST CITY WILL DECIDE TOMORROW WHETHER OR NOT THEY WILL OPEN TOMORROW, DEPENDING ON WHERE THE OUTAGES STAND.
