Minthara is a powerful character the plalyer could have to fight in Baldur's Gate 3.

Wyll has one of the most interesting stories among the player’s companions, and can play an important role in Act 1. Here’s how the player can make the best Wyll build and make sure he's overpowered.

Updated on March 5, 2024, by Rei Penber: Wyll is a fan-favorite companion with one of the more interesting stories in Baldur's Gate 3. While he might fall short for some players, knowing how to make the most out of him can change him from an average companion into a powerful one. The player can keep Wyll as a simple Warlock for the entire game, or they can experiment with multiclassing him for a more fresh experience with Wyll.

Who Is Wyll And Where To Recruit Him

Wyll is an origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3 that can either be used as the player’s main character or be recruited as the player advances in the story.

This character will be found fairly early on, outside of the Emerald Grove when the player has to face off against some Goblins. After defeating the Goblins, the player can go into the Hollow and find him around some Tiefling children. After the player talks to him, they have the option to recruit him as a companion. However, making some decisions later on could cause him to permanently leave the player’s roster.

“Noble by birth, Wyll made his name as the heroic 'Blade of Frontiers'. He keeps his pact with a devil well-hidden, and is desperate to escape the hellish bargain - even if that means rescuing the seductive creature that made the deal.”

Wyll by default is of the Warlock class, which means he made a pact with a powerful entity. His subclass is that of The Fiend. His background is Folk Hero.

When the player first gets to recruit Wyll, these will be his abilities:

Best Wyll Build In Baldur's Gate 3

Wyll will already be a Warlock, specifically with The Fiend subclass when the player meets and recruits him. The player could respec him to change that by speaking with Withers. However, for this guide, Wyll will stay a Warlock with The Fiend subclass as that probably is the best fit for him, gameplay and canon-wise.

When a Warlock reaches level 2, they get access to the Eldritch Invocations. These are spells that will be very useful. For Wyll, some recommended picks are:

  • Agonizing Blast: Available at level 2, it will add damage to Eldritch’s Blast based on Wyll’s charisma.
  • Armour Of Shadows: Available at level 2. It will allow Wyll to cast a mage armor which will increase his armor class.
  • Thief Of Five Fates: Available at level 2. It will allow Wyll to use Bane, which can be on up to 3 enemies. Bane causes enemies to suffer a negative 1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws.
  • Repelling Blast: Available at level 2. It makes his Eldritch Blast more powerful as it will push enemies back up to 4.5 meters when hit. It can be acquired at level 2.
  • Book Of Ancient Secrets. Available at level 7. It will grant Wyll access to Ray Of Sickness, Chromatic Orb, and Silence. These can be used once per long rest.

When it comes to Cantrips, the best options the player can go for are:

  • Eldritch Blast: An Evocation Cantrip. With a range of 18 meters, it can cause heavy damage as it starts off with a 1d10 force damage, but this will go up as the player builds Wyll up. This fires two beams that can be targeted at two distinct enemies if so desired.
  • True Strike: A Divination Cantrip. For the duration of two turns, Wyll will get the advantage on attack rolls. It makes it more likely to land a hit.
  • Bone Chill: A Necromancy Cantrip. It causes 1d8 damage and stops the enemy from healing until the player’s next turn. On an undead enemy, they will receive a penalty on attack rolls.
  • Blade Ward: An Abjuration Cantrip. It lasts for 2 turns and will allow Wyll to tank more attacks than usual, specifically halving the damage from Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing.

The Most Fun Baldur’s Gate 3 Classes, Ranked

These classes give the player the most fun experience in Baldur's Gate 3.

When it comes to spells, Wyll can go for:

  • Hex: An Enchantment Spell. When cast, Wyll’s attacks would deal an extra 1d6 necrotic damage. Additionally, the enemy will receive a penalty for a chosen ability. If the ability doesn’t expire before the enemy is killed, Wyll can recast Hex for no cost.
  • Hold Person: An Enchantment Spell. When cast on an enemy, the enemy is unable to do anything for 10 turns.
  • Hunger Of Hadar: A Conjuration Spell. Casts a black sphere where anyone inside gets blinded and takes damage. If starting their turn inside, they receive a 2d6 cold damage, meanwhile, if ending their turn there, they receive a 2d6 acid damage.
  • Blight: A Necromancy Spell. Deals an impressive 8d8 necrotic damage to an enemy. Even when enemies perform a saving throw, they still take half the damage. However, it is ineffective against undead enemies.

When picking which one of the Pact Boons to go with at level 3, the player should definitely take the Pact Of The Blade.

Best Wyll Multiclass Build

While some players would rather keep Wyll as a Warlock for their entire Baldur’s Gate 3 run, others might prefer dipping into multiclassing. Players new to Baldur’s Gate 3 might not be that knowledgeable about multiclassing, which can be very confusing, so here’s perhaps the best Multiclass build for Wyll in BG3.

There are many options to work with Wyll, depending on what the player wants to do with him, but a good option to Multiclass with is the Fighter Class. However, if the player wants a more spell-based multiclass build, they should look into multiclassing the Warlock class with the Sorcerer class instead.

When it comes to the Warlock-Fighter Multiclass build, the player will of course start level 1 as a Warlock. The player should choose the Fiend as Wyll’s subclass.

The player should continue to level 2, still as a Warlock, and unlock Eldritch Invocations.

Leveling up again, at level 3, the player should stay as a Warlock and unlock one of the best features the Warlock class offers, the Pact Boon. The player needs to pick the Pact of the Blade as it is, by far, the best option here.

At Level 4, Wyll remains a Warlock and acquires a feat. Savage Attacker is a great option here as it allows Wyll to roll the damage dice twice and use whatever number is higher when performing melee attacks.

Baldur's Gate 3: Best Astarion Build

Astarion is a fan-favorite character from BG3 and here's his best build.

Level 5 will be the last Warlock level for now. Wyll will unlock Deepened Pac, which will be incredibly useful. With his Pact of the Blade, he will now gain an extra attack when using his Pact Weapon.

Now, the player will change and go into the Fighter Class. The player will now be Warlock 5 and Fighter 1. Wyll will gain Second Wind, which allows him to use a bonus action to heal himself and he can also unlock a fighting style. The best option for him is the Dueling Fighting style.

Then, when the player levels up and becomes Warlock 5 and Fighter 2, Wyll will unlock Action Surge. This is one of the best abilities of the Fighter Class, as it allows the character to gain an extra action in the same turn.

When Wyll levels up again, keep the Fighter class to become Warlock 5 and Fighter 3. Wyll will now choose a Fighter Subclass. The best option for him is the Battle Master. With this subclass, Wyll unlocks 4 superiority dives and can choose 3 battle manœuvres, solid options being:

• Disarming Attack. Deals an extra 1d8 damage and possibly disarm your enemy.

• Evasive Footwork. The enemies’ melee attacks get a disadvantage for a turn.

• Feinting Attack. Allows Wyll to attack with an advantage and deals an extra 1d8 damage.

With another level up as a Fighter, Wyll is now Warlock 5 and Fighter 4. He doesn't get anything grand at this level, but he can unlock a feat. The player should go with Tough, which increases the max HP of Wyll by 2 for each level he gains.

The next level up as a Fighter will be a great one, as when Wyll becomes a Warlock 5 and Fighter 5, he will unlock Extra Attack. After Wyll attacks with a weapon or unarmed, he will get to attack again, free of charge. This overpowered ability will allow Wyll to attack multiple times a turn, and he can stack it up with his already gained additional attack from his Pact weapon.

Wyll will continue to level up as a Fighter. At Warlock 5 and Fighter 6, he unlocks another Feat once again. Durable is a great option for Wyll here as it allows him to regain full HP after every short rest and increases his constitution by 1.

Finally, Wyll will level up again as a Fighter, leaving him at the end as a Warlock 5 and Fighter 7. He will receive one more superiority dice, and he will be able to choose 2 new manœuvres. Two great options for him would be the following:

• Precision Attack. Wyll rolls a superiority Dice and the result is added to his attack roll.

• Trip Attack. Deal an extra 1d8 damage and possibly cause prone to the enemy.

Best Items For Wyll In Baldur's Gate 3

When building a powerful character, items can really make or break them. While these items will not be found until a bit later in the game, they’re worth looking for.

For Wyll, some amazing gear can include:

  • The Potent Robe: This Robe will have some great benefits, such as Gregarious Caster, which will increase the damage of cantrips, based on the character’s charisma. It will also give the character Well-Liked And Well-Fortified, which, at the beginning of Wyll’s turn, would give him extra hit points, also based on his Charisma modifier. Armor Class +1.
  • Birthright: A very rare helmet that will give additional charisma points to Wyll, making the previous Potent Robe even more useful.
  • The Baneful: A rare short sword. It can only be used by Wyll if he makes it his Pact weapon. But when he does, it can do some heavy damage. It gives an extra +1 to damage and attack rolls. It can also bane the hit enemy. It’s a very light sword with a Weapon Enchantment +1.
  • The Duellist’s Prerogative: A legendary rapier that is perfect for Wyll to wield. It has a 1d8 piercing damage as well as an extra 1d4 necrotic one. The weapon simply has many advantages, such as Elegant Dualist, which can grant an extra reaction per turn. Withering Cut, a reaction will deal extra necrotic damage, which will match the proficiency bonus. Wyll would also get access to 2 bonus actions, the first being Challenge To Duel, which will lead the enemy to only attack the character and cause the enemy bleeding when hit. The second is Dueller’s Enthusiasm, which allows Wyll to make an extra melee attack as long as his second hand is free.
